The SCARF Project
Moral Fairground facilitated 'The Scarf Project' between Lao Sericulture and RMIT BATD second year print students to design and hand screenprint onto Mulberries 100% hand spun and woven fair trade Lao silk scarves.

All money raised via the sale of this printed scarf will go to Lao Sericulture, a not for profit organisation in Laos. This will assist them in supplying water filters and building toilets for the schools and hospitals in the remote villages that undertake silk production and weaving using traditional methods.

Jodi Andrews 'Vanitas'
acid dye hand screenprint

The Vanitas design responds to preoccupations with 'youth' and the 'new' and the fear of death.
The tulip motif reinforces these ideas through its historic symbolism. 'Tulipmania' in the 18th centry Holland was a period during which the dominance of a single commodity, the tulip, led to national boom and bust. This imbued the tulip motif with a symbolic poignancy which was used within the vanitas style of painting to express the ephemeral nature of youth, beauty and life.
The Vanitas design raises issues around sustainability and ethics in fashion by considering each stage of a garments existence (birth, life and retirement) and encouraging new ways of considering age and value.

Kate Tuckett 'Imprint'
reactive dye hand screenprint and handpainting

Imprint investigates the inner environments we explore in our life, not ony our home but also our inner identity. The poppy, which is dedicated to the gods of sleep and dreams, is the main floral reference in the design. The motif supports and gives relief to our inner environments in times of grief or sorrow, bringing consolation to ones suffering physically or emotionally, evoking happiness and joy to ones self.
Within the design larger areas of strong colours are used together with loose bleeding effects and line work to create strength and fragility. Layers of colour and texture are combined to build up form and interest.

Loredana Camarata 'Hypno'
acid dye hand screenprint and handpainting

Translated for screenprint from a hand painted design, Hypno features the Oriental poppy on a backdrop of seed pods from the Lunaria Annua plant. The artwork creates a dark yet playful mood referencing the ideas of endless sleep, oblivion and restfulness - the cultural meaning behind poppies. The deep black blackdrop creates a somber and hauting mood, which is offset with the playful and whimsical colours in the poppies petals and flower centre.
